The next-generation 5-meter-high mining shearer for shortwall mining has been successfully developed.

Recently, the new-generation large-height, single-drum, short-wall coal mining equipment developed by Shanghai Coal Science & Technology Research Institute of China Coal Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd. — specifically the MG300/395-NWD shearer — has successfully completed its factory acceptance tests and is about to enter underground industrial trials.

In response to the national call for building a sound ecological environment and promoting the concept of green mine development, with the aim of achieving a win-win situation that balances ecological sustainability and economic benefits, Shanghai Coal Science & Technology Tian Di Mining has been actively exploring green mining technologies and equipment for shortwall face filling. In collaboration with well-known mining enterprises such as Yaojie Coal & Electricity Group and China University of Mining and Technology, the company is conducting intensive technological research and development involving industry, academia, research, and application. Furthermore, Shanghai Coal Science & Technology Tian Di Mining is deeply involved in the “Three Below” steeply inclined extra-thick coal seam paste-filling mining project organized by the Gansu Provincial Department of Science and Technology. Specifically for the one-time full-height extraction from 5-meter-thick coal seams using shortwall faces, the company has independently developed high-end intelligent equipment—the MG300/395-NWD single-drum shortwall shearer.

This project was launched in 2020. Building on the foundation of conventional short-wall shearer machines, it features a boldly innovative design that has overcome several technical challenges, including the overall layout of an ultra-short machine body, autonomous control of multi-stage rocker arm positioning, and full-process automated coal mining. These advancements have enhanced the operational stability of high-cut coal mining machines and improved the reliability of overall machine connections. As a result, the MG300/395-NWD shearer boasts numerous structural innovations, such as a dual-layer “machine body,” dual traction systems, and multi-stage rocker arms. Additionally, it incorporates several new technologies and processes, including hydraulic motor-driven rocker arms, multi-arm linkage, a staggered double-box hydraulic system, and single-cutter layered mining.

The MG300/395-NWD shearer has a body length of approximately 4 meters and a total installed power of 395 kW. It is suitable for working faces with lengths less than 15 meters, and its maximum mining height has been increased from the original 3.8 meters to 5.1 meters, filling a domestic and international gap in short-wall shearing machines capable of handling a 5-meter mining height. This shearer can be widely applied to extremely thick and difficult-to-mine coal seams located beneath buildings, railways, and bodies of water ("three under" conditions), as well as to large-scale longwall mining operations, recovery of large coal pillars, extraction of irregular corner and edge coal, and horizontal layered mining of steeply inclined, extra-thick coal seams. Its application is of great significance for improving coal resource recovery rates and achieving high productivity and efficiency in small- and medium-sized coal mines.
